A battery that runs two tube lights and a fan for under thirty minutes is at the end of its life. Backup time, not age, is what is measured.
Swelling and leakage
A bulging case or acid at the terminals is a safety failure. The battery is still collected for lead recovery, at scrap value.
Waveform
Pure sine wave inverters run modern electronics safely; square wave units do not, and the second-hand market reflects that gap.

An inverter that charges its battery to full and cuts off correctly is the difference between a working unit and a shell.

Can I sell the battery without the inverter?
Yes. Lead-acid batteries are bought on their own for their lead content and, if they still hold charge, for reuse. The two are priced independently.
Is a dead inverter battery worth anything?
Yes. Scrap value on a 200 Ah tubular battery is real even when it will no longer hold a charge, because the lead is recovered.
Do you buy solar hybrid inverters?
Yes, and they price well, because MPPT units are in demand wherever rooftop solar is being added to an existing home.
Is handling an old battery dangerous?
Do not attempt to move a leaking battery yourself. The pickup team carries them upright in a tray, which is also why you should note whether the case is intact.
